Dear Mr. Gardner,

My Corrective Reading group just finished your story of you in High School as a great pitcher until your car accident. How you thought you would never pitch again until the girl from your botany class, Patty, encouraged you to try again. Now, your wife. My class asked me if this was a true story and we looked you up and to our amazement it’s a real story. We had a lot of discussions on how bad things may seem that you keep trying, you never give up, as you did.

It would be wonderful if you would write to us and tell us more about you and Patty.

Damon, I’ll email you. I’m the sports marketing guy at Hinds CC so we’re both in Raymond. We’ll catch up because this is not the first time I’ve thought about incorporating Raymond.

Dear Mr. Gardner,
My Corrective Reading class just finished the story of a young man who was an amazing pitcher in high school until he was in a car accident and had terrible arm injuries. He thought he would never pitch again until a girl at his school encouraged him to get back out there and try again. Of course, that young man, was you and the girl, is your wife, Patty. My class and I had no idea until the very end of the story that it was based on a true story. I brought my class over to my desk and we GOOGLED you to learn more about you. I gave them a homework assignment to find out more about you. Your story is an inspiration to me and my class.
I know they would be thrilled if you would write back to us and tell us more about how you and Patty are doing, if you have children (grandchildren).

It was amazing how you pitched in high school and made it to the major league. We were happy that you made a come back to pitching after the car accident. Hey Art,

You probably don’t remember me, but in the summer of 1980 I attended a Denver Bears baseball game (I went to almost all of them when I was in high school). It was the last game of the season and you (playing center field) were warming up with the right fielder. I was sitting in the front row along the first baseline. I was watching the pitcher warm up when a baseball hit me right in the mouth striking my front tooth. You had overthrown the right fielder when the ball hit me in the mouth. I kept the ball and after the game you circled the area that supposedly hit my tooth and you also signed the ball. I have never forgotten you Art nor will I ever. Congratulations on your success with Mississippi RBI. I sure enjoyed watching you play for the Denver Bears!!

Thanks Jay! More news to come on how the affiliation with MLB is going to open doors that would never be opened for us otherwise.

RBI national tournaments and the RBI World Series are the best. We need people to donate money so we can reach the goals for 2010. We didn’t get close in 09, sad to say.

I hope that means you’re in for coaching next summer. -Brian

Just a wonderful story! I’m so glad the kids from Grove Park got to experience the STL and the All-Star Game. Both are baseball nirvana.

I’m so proud to be associated with Mississippi RBI and I know that, as we move forward, these moments (for us) and experiences (for them) will become the norm rather than the exception.

I couldn’t be more proud of the work that Brian Emory has done and am so excited to be along for the ride.

When does baseball start again?
